Engine remappingStage 1

The first step in engine tuning: a custom map written onto the factory ECU and validated on the dyno, to unlock your car's potential without touching the hardware.

The principle

What is a Stage 1?

A Stage 1 rewrites the engine ECU map with no hardware modification. It uses the headroom left by the manufacturer on ignition timing, boost pressure or fuelling to gain power and, above all, more torque earlier in the rev range.

It is the ideal level for a healthy stock engine: it transforms the driving feel, sharpens acceleration and stays reliable when done properly on a well-maintained engine.

What you gain

The benefits of a well-executed Stage 1

A successful Stage 1 is not just a power figure: it makes the car more enjoyable and more coherent to drive.

Torque available earlier

The gain is felt mainly mid-range: crisp pick-up, calmer overtaking, smoother driving on the road.

Response and feel

Sharper throttle response and a more linear power delivery, without the harshness of a poorly executed tune.

Custom, never generic

Every map is tailored to the vehicle, the fuel and the real condition of the engine — never a downloaded generic file.

Reliability preserved

Parameters kept within the engine's safe limits, control runs and proper maintenance: longevity stays the priority.

Our method

Validated on the dyno

Every Stage 1 starts with an electronic diagnosis, an ECU read, then the writing of an adjusted map. The car is then placed on the dyno to measure the real gains and check air-fuel ratio, temperatures and boost pressure.

Nothing is left to feel alone: values are checked, corrected if needed, then validated with road tests and, for our track clients, in circuit conditions at Le Castellet.

Road & track

Built for the road as much as the track

Based in Signes, right opposite the Paul Ricard circuit, Bernis Factory prepares cars used every day as well as cars built for track days. A Stage 1 map can favour road comfort or handle the thermal demands of the track — we adapt to how you actually drive.

Frequently asked

Stage 1 remapping: your questions

Does Stage 1 harm the engine?

No, when carried out on a healthy, well-maintained engine. Parameters stay within the margins allowed by the manufacturer; it is a poorly executed or over-pushed tune that puts the mechanicals at risk.

Do I need to change parts for a Stage 1?

No. By definition a Stage 1 is done on the stock configuration, with no hardware modification. Hardware upgrades (intake, exhaust, turbo) belong to the higher stages.

What gains can I expect?

It depends on the engine. Turbocharged units benefit most from Stage 1, with noticeable gains in power and above all torque. Naturally aspirated engines progress more modestly. The dyno gives the real figure for your car.

Is Stage 1 reversible?

Yes. We keep the original map and can return the ECU to its factory state at any time, for example before a resale or a dealership visit.

How long does it take?

A Stage 1 remap is usually completed within a day, including diagnosis, mapping, dyno runs and testing. We confirm the slot when you book your appointment.

Stage 1 remapping in the Var

Bernis Factory works in Signes and across the Var (83) — Le Castellet, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Brignoles, La Ciotat — for Stage 1 engine remapping of sports and classic cars. Our immediate proximity to the Paul Ricard circuit lets us validate every build in real conditions.

Whether you are after more road enjoyment or a healthy base before a more ambitious build, Stage 1 remains the most controlled entry point. We always favour reliability and a custom approach over chasing numbers.
