Stage 1 and stage 2 engine: what changes

A stage 1 optimises the engine through mapping alone. A stage 2 goes further by pairing it with mechanical upgrades. Here is how we approach each one.

Stage 1

Engine remap only

A software optimisation of the ECU, with no mechanical change, to make the most of your engine's original potential.

  • Recalibrated engine map
  • No parts to replace
  • Suited to road use
Stage 2

Mapping and mechanical upgrades

A map designed in line with upgrades such as a sport exhaust or intake, for a more noticeable gain.

  • Map tied to the installed parts
  • Sport exhaust or intake
  • Built for road and track
Our method

Bespoke engine mapping, never generic

A stage 1 or stage 2 is never about loading a ready-made map. At Bernis Factory, every remap starts from your engine, its real condition and the way you use the car, on the road as much as on track. Our engine engineer calibrates the map case by case, to respect the mechanics while unlocking their potential.

This bespoke approach extends to the gearbox when relevant, so the whole setup stays consistent. We work on high-end sports cars such as Ferrari, BMW M, Mercedes AMG, Porsche or Nissan GT-R, always with the same principle: no generic map, only a setting designed for the car in front of us.

The process

How a stage 1 or stage 2 works at Bernis Factory

From first contact to handover, every step aims to understand your car before any work begins.

01

Discussion and assessment

We look at your car, its condition and the intended use, on road or track, before any work.

02

Electronic diagnosis

A precise reading of the engine and its ECU forms the basis for clean, controlled work.

03

Bespoke mapping

Our engine engineer calibrates the engine map, and the gearbox if needed, case by case.

04

Checks and handover

We check the engine's behaviour before giving you back a car that's ready to drive.

Paul Ricard circuit

Engine tuning and preparation for the Paul Ricard circuit

Part of our activity revolves around the track. Our workshop is 700 metres from the Paul Ricard circuit at Le Castelet, which lets us support owners before and after a track day. A stage 2 makes full sense for track use, in line with chassis and braking preparation. We are an official BMW M France partner for track support and recommended by ORECA, and our team has a recovery truck to step in on site.

Stage 1 and stage 2 remapping in Signes and Le Castelet

Bernis Factory is located at 26 Allée de Dublin in Signes, in the Var. This closeness to the Paul Ricard circuit shapes our business and gives easy access to enthusiasts from the region and visitors passing through Le Castelet. Whether you want a stage 1 for road use or a track-focused stage 2, you'll find a workshop here that covers three complementary trades: maintenance, preparation and restoration of high-end sports cars.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about stage 1 and stage 2 engine tuning

What is the difference between a stage 1 and a stage 2 engine?

A stage 1 relies only on remapping the ECU, with no mechanical change. A stage 2 combines the map with upgrades such as a sport exhaust or intake, for a stronger, more consistent gain.

Is your engine mapping generic?

No. Our engine engineer calibrates every map case by case, based on your engine and intended use. We never load an identical file from one car to the next.

Is a stage 1 or stage 2 suitable for track use?

Yes, especially the stage 2, which we design in line with chassis and braking preparation. Our workshop is 700 metres from the Paul Ricard circuit, which makes testing and support easier.

Which makes do you carry out a stage 1 or stage 2 on?

We work on high-end sports cars such as Ferrari, BMW M, Mercedes AMG, Porsche or Nissan GT-R. Each project is studied according to the engine involved and its potential.

How much does a stage 1 or stage 2 cost?

Every remap is bespoke and depends on your car and intended use. The simplest step is to contact us so we can study your project and provide a suitable estimate.

Why Bernis Factory

Why choose Bernis Factory for a stage 1 or stage 2

Finding a workshop that can carry out a stage 1 or stage 2 engine remap with a genuinely bespoke map is rare. Much of what's offered is limited to a generic remap, identical from one car to the next. Bernis Factory approaches remapping differently, with the eye of an engine engineer who tunes each engine individually, in Signes, a stone's throw from the Paul Ricard circuit.

Choosing Bernis Factory for a stage 1 or stage 2 means relying on a workshop that also masters chassis preparation, high-performance braking, sport exhaust systems and track support. This overall view lets us consider your engine project over time, in line with how you actually use your car, rather than as a single isolated operation.
