What is engine mapping?

A clear guide to understanding what engine mapping is, written by a workshop located 700 metres from the Paul Ricard circuit.

What is engine mapping, concretely?

Engine mapping is the set of settings stored in the electronic control unit that runs the engine. This unit constantly reads the data sent by the sensors and decides, from tables of values, how to manage fuel injection, ignition timing or boost pressure. These tables of values are precisely what we call the map.

Remapping an engine therefore means modifying these tables to adapt the engine's behaviour to a specific goal, without mechanically touching any parts. At Bernis Factory, this work is carried out by an engine engineer who tunes each engine case by case, rather than applying a generic map that would ignore the car in front of him.

Topics related to engine mapping

Understanding engine mapping also means knowing how it fits with our other work. Here are the workshop pages that explain each of these topics in detail.

How an engine mapping session works in our workshop

It all starts with how the car is actually used: road, track, or both. This step guides every choice, because a map intended for daily use does not aim for the same balance as one designed for track sessions. Electronic diagnostics then check the state of the engine and its sensors before any modification.

Finally comes the tuning work itself, carried out by our engine engineer. Rather than loading a ready-made map, each table is adjusted for the engine and gearbox of the car in question. This bespoke logic is at the heart of our approach: it aims for behaviour that is coherent and faithful to the way the owner really uses their sports car.

Engine mapping and track days at the Paul Ricard circuit

Mapping makes the most sense around the track. Our workshop is located 700 metres from the Paul Ricard circuit at Le Castelet, which lets us support owners before, during and after a track day. We are an official BMW M France partner for track support and recommended by ORECA, and our team has a recovery truck to step in directly on site.

Engine mapping in Signes and around Le Castelet

Bernis Factory is located at 26 Allée de Dublin in Signes, in the Var. This closeness to the Paul Ricard circuit shapes our business: maintenance, preparation and restoration of high-end sports cars meet here every day. Enthusiasts from the region and visitors passing through Le Castelet find a workshop able to explain and carry out engine mapping genuinely suited to their car.

Frequently asked questions about engine mapping

What is engine mapping in a few words?
It is the set of settings stored in the engine's control unit, which notably determine the management of injection, ignition and boost. Remapping means adjusting these settings to adapt the engine's behaviour to a specific use.
Is engine mapping always bespoke?
Not necessarily, as many players apply generic maps. At Bernis Factory, every engine is tuned case by case by an engine engineer, starting from the car and the owner's use rather than from a ready-made map.
Do you need a diagnostic before engine mapping?
Yes, it is a logical step. Electronic diagnostics check the state of the engine and its sensors before working on the control unit, so we work on a sound and known basis.
Is engine mapping only for the track?
No. A map can be designed for road use, for the track or for both. The use goal defined at the start guides all the settings made on the engine and gearbox.
Do you give a price for engine mapping?
Every map is bespoke and depends on the car and its intended use. For an estimate suited to your vehicle, the simplest step is to contact us directly so we can study your project together.

Understanding engine mapping with a specialist workshop

Trying to find out what engine mapping is often leads to vague or overly technical explanations. Yet the idea is simple to state: the control unit settings that govern how the engine runs. Bernis Factory covers this subject from its Signes workshop, with the eye of an engine engineer used to tuning each engine individually rather than applying a generic map.

This page links the definition of mapping to our concrete trades: bespoke engine mapping, engine preparation, electronic diagnostics and track preparation around the Paul Ricard. It is a gateway to move from understanding the subject to a considered project on your own sports car.
